Closing the gap between design and execution

About Us

about us

Designing spaces where stories breathe

Meru Design Studio was built around a simple idea. Spaces should not just look good, they should work seamlessly. In everyday life, under real conditions, and without constant fixes or compromises.

In Kolkata, most interior and renovation work is fragmented. Multiple vendors, limited coordination, and no single point of responsibility. Good ideas get lost in execution, and small technical issues turn into long-term problems. Meru was created to change that.

We bring design and execution under one approach. From early planning and technical assessment to final finishes, every decision is made with both aesthetics and practicality in mind. What is drawn is what gets built. What is built is made to last.

The way we approach spaces comes from a different kind of background. Mrinal, the founder, comes from a background in filmmaking. Years spent directing, editing, and building scenes frame by frame shaped how he sees space. Composition, flow, what to include, what to leave out, and how a person experiences a space over time.

Before Meru, he worked closely with sound recording studios, starting as a distributor for Apple-based systems and equipment. That led to a deeper involvement in how these spaces function. Acoustic behaviour, layout precision, and technical integration. Over time, he became a go-to person for designing recording floors and studio environments where performance and accuracy matter.

That same attention to detail carries into every project at Meru.

Earlier this year, Mayank joined as partner. The two go back almost a decade. Mrinal ran a filmmaking academy where Mayank was among his first students. Short films, long conversations, and a shared mutual love for good design. Over time, they went into different directions, but stayed in touch through all of it.

Mayank brings a different but complementary perspective to Meru. His experience spans across industries, from building a resort in the Sundarbans to running a rose farm in the Rajasthan desert, to leading hatchtag, a brand consultancy. Each venture required understanding how people experience a space or a brand, and then building it from the ground up.

At Meru, that translates into a clear belief. Good design is not a luxury. It is the difference between a space that works and one that does not. Together, the focus is simple. Fewer gaps, better decisions, and spaces that hold up over time.

our values

what we do not compromise on

Honesty

Clear estimates, realistic timelines, and no surprises mid-project. We say what we will do and do what we say.

Craft

We care about how things are built. Good materials, proper prep, and finish that holds up over time.

Accountability

One team and one point of contact, from start to finish. If something goes wrong, we fix it.
